Following is an excerpt from the foreword to A Season of Preaching by Dr. Michael W. Mooty, editor of A Season of Preaching: This volume is a collection of sermons from the last thirteen years of Biblical Preaching Journal. Let me be quick to say that it is not intended to be a "Best of the Journal" volume. How can one judge that this sermon is better than that sermon? No. As I read and reread sermons from my back issue collection of the Journal, I was struck again by the high quality of the work that has been produced in those pages. It quickly became apparent that what I had to prepare was a representative sample of sermons that had appeared in Biblical Preaching Journal. Because Biblical Preaching Journal follows the Revised Common Lectionary, the sermons live in the seasons of the Christian year. Over the years, many of the sermons published have been sensitive to the kinds of stories that are told in particular seasons. Christmas brings its own challenges and opportunities, as does Lent. For this volume, I have chosen representative sermons from each season, to give the reader a taste of how preachers move through the Christian story. |
